Most furniture shopping goes one of two ways. Either you spend more than you meant to on something that looks great and does nothing, or you buy the cheap thing and it wobbles by spring.

We started Our Family House somewhere in between. Side tables, coffee tables and shelving that hold up, cost a sensible amount, and actually solve a problem — where do you put the remote, the mugs, the pile of books that has taken over the floor.

Everything we sell has a job. The lift-top coffee table exists because eating dinner on the sofa shouldn't mean hunching over. The C-shaped side table slides under the couch because there's no room beside it. The bookshelf has a magazine rack because that's where the magazines end up anyway.

We look for pieces that work in real rooms, not photo studios. Rooms with a radiator in an awkward spot and not quite enough floor.

The look is mostly rustic and industrial — wood tops, dark metal frames. It suits most homes without needing everything else to match, which matters when you're buying one piece at a time rather than furnishing a room from scratch.

Because it's real wood, the grain and tone vary a little from piece to piece. We think that's the point.

Shipping is free anywhere in the US, and you have 30 days to send something back if it doesn't work in your space. Measure first, though — we list the dimensions on every product page, and a return on a coffee table is nobody's idea of a good afternoon.
